Nippon Paper Group, Inc. (President: Yoshio Haga) is planning and implementing power-saving measures as outlined below that will surpass the government's target of "15% reduction of peak power," in response to concerns that the areas served by Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated and Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. will suffer power shortages this summer.
Further, in response to requests from the Tokyo Electric Power Company and Tohoku Electric Power to be supplied with electricity, since June 22 the Nippon Paper Group has been gradually transmitting its excess electricity from its in-house power generating facilities to the two utilities.
As well as saving power by reducing purchased electricity, by supplying electricity that utilizes its in-house power generating facilities the Nippon Paper Group will help to stabilize domestic power supply, thereby fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.
- 1.Initiatives for large-scale demand locations (power contract for 500kW or more)
In the areas served by Tohoku Electric Power (six business sites) and Tokyo Electric Power Company (23 business sites), the Nippon Paper Group has reduced purchased electricity by using its in-house power generating facilities to generate the maximum volume of electricity. As a result, from July onward, when power restrictions are already in force, it is meeting its target of reducing peak electricity across the entire Group by at least 15% compared with last year.
- 2.Initiatives for small-scale demand locations (power contract for less than 500kW)
The Nippon Paper Group formulated a plan to reduce peak electricity at each business site in the areas served by Tohoku Electric Power (9 business sites) and Tokyo Electric Power Company (29 business sites). Aiming for a reduction of at least 15% compared with last year, specific initiatives include lighting energy saving, adjusting preset temperature for air conditioning to 28 ℃, and staggering power use through shift work.
- 3.Energy saving initiatives in Head Office
The Head Office building, occupied by ten of the main Group companies including Nippon Paper Industries (1-2-2 Hitotsubashi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), commenced voluntary power saving without delay after the earthquake. As a result, every month since April power savings of approximately 30% compared with the same month last year have been achieved. The specific measures taken are detailed below:
- (1)Lighting energy saving -- switch off unnecessary lights, remove lights in non-essential areas, switch off all lights during lunch breaks
- (2)Air conditioning energy saving -- adjust pre-set temperature (28 ℃), shorten hours of operation
- (3)Shifting hours of power usage -- implement daylight saving time (this year to commence May 9)
- (4)Other -- reduce number of elevators in service, set office automation devices to power saving mode, etc.
- 4.Promoting energy saving in households
The Nippon Paper Group is working to raise awareness in respect of energy saving by introducing to its employees the "Energy Saving Measures Menu" issued by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. Moreover, in June 100 of the Group's employees participated in "Diagnosing the eco-home to reduce COparticipated in "Diagnosing the eco-home to reduce CO2 and save energy in the homes of employees,"* a support project of the Ministry of the Environment, receiving individual diagnoses to enable them to make effective energy savings. The results of the diagnoses will lead to an even more heightened awareness in the future in respect of energy saving, as well as to specific actions for saving energy.
- *This is a project that dispatches diagnostic personnel from the Ministry of the Environment to diagnose the energy use, CO2 emissions, and so forth in the homes of business employees, and to offer effective CO2 reduction and energy saving measures for each household, as well as providing information in respect of the costs and benefits of such measures.
