Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd. (head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo,President and Representative Director: Toru Nozawa, hereinafter referred to as“the Company”) is anelite trees with high CO2 absorption capacity, excellent growth, and low pollen content. We will expand the seedling production business of (Note 1) to the whole country.
The Company have already started production of elite treesand other seedlings in Kumamoto Prefecture and Hokkaido, but this time, we have started production of Japanese cedarseedlings in the 7 areas in Japan based on theforestry industrySeed and Seedling Law, and in 4 prefectures: 3 wards (Shizuoka Prefecture), 4 wards (Tottori Prefecture, northern Hiroshima Prefecture), 5 wards (southern Hiroshima Prefecture), and 6 wards (Oita Prefecture), based on the Special Measures Act for Thinning We applied for“Specified Propagation Business Plan”for the propagation of elite trees of Japanese cedar and Japanese cypress, and were certified as“specified breeding company”(Note 2) in each prefecture.
The Company order to produce seeds and scions necessary for the production of seedlings such aselite trees, we will createseed plantationandscion plantation(Note 3) in these regions, and establish a collaborative system with local forest seed and seed cooperative members and new producers, and from 2024, we will also createelite trees in Honshu. We will produce container seedlings. As for seed plantation, by making it a closed facility where artificial breeding is carried out in a greenhouse, it is possible to ensure thatelite treesare crossed with each other, and it is possible to produce seeds that fully inherit the characteristics ofelite treesand increase production compared to conventional open fields. In addition, in the creation of theseseed plantationandscion plantation, we plan to apply for government subsidies (measures to promote the production of excellent seedlings such as early maturing trees).
In this Plan, we expect to increase the production of seedlings such as 600,000elite trees, and we will also consider the distribution of seedlings across prefectures (Note 4) based on the construction sites ofseed plantationandscion plantation. In addition, while assessing demand trends in the future, we will expand the scale and expand to the remaining areas.

Specified mother trees are designated by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as particularly outstanding in terms of growth-related characteristics in order to improve the ability of forests to absorb and fix CO2 in the Special Measures Act for Thinning, etc. The criteria for designation include growth that is more than 1.5 times that of conventional lines, pollen content is less than half that of commonJapanese cedarandJapanese cypress, and there is no bend in the straightness of the trunk.

In Hokkaido, we have developed an efficient seedling production technology for Clean Larch, an interspecific hybrid of the specific mother tree of Guimachi and Japanese larch Elite Tree, and started producing Clean Larch.
