Packaging Research Laboratory
In addition to our foundational paper manufacturing technology, we are engaged in the research and development of packaging materials and solutions derived from wood biomass. This includes technologies that enhance the functionality of paper—such as improving barrier properties—as well as technologies that enable the paper to be processed into various shapes without compromising its performance or usability as packaging. Furthermore, we are actively researching and developing liquid paper cartons and folding cartons, driven by customer needs. Our experienced staff collaborates closely with customers, conducting repeated trials, to assist in the development of innovative systems, including sample preparations and verification tests.
Corrugated Box Research
NIPPON PAPER GROUP's research on corrugated boxes focuses on maximizing the utilization of renewable wood resources and minimizing environmental impact. We are dedicated to developing next-generation packaging solutions that offer both reduced environmental burden and superior functionality. Our technological advancements, including weight reduction, enhanced strength, improved water and moisture resistance, and increased recyclability, contribute to greater transportation efficiency, superior product protection, and a reduction in plastic usage. We aim to meet the diverse needs of our customers and pioneer new possibilities for corrugated boxes that foster a sustainable society.
Packaging Materials Research
We are developing innovative packaging materials designed to replace various plastics. This involves applying diverse functionalities and processing techniques to paper, a biomass material. Our development efforts focus not only on enhancing environmental compatibility, such as by compounding with eco-friendly materials, but also on creating user-friendly materials that precisely meet our customers' needs.
-
Barrier Paper

We have developed 'SHIELDPLUS™', a paper packaging material that is not only environmentally friendly but also boasts high barrier properties, effectively preventing the passage of oxygen, fragrance, and water vapor. Positioned as a novel alternative to conventional films, SHIELDPLUS™ is anticipated to be adopted across a broad spectrum of applications.
-
Heat-Sealable Paper

We are conducting research and development on an innovative material: heat-sealable paper, which features a heat-sealing layer applied using water-based coating technology. This innovation enables "packaging with just paper," achieving both superior environmental compatibility and excellent recyclability. It provides sustainable packaging solutions across diverse sectors, ranging from food products to daily necessities.
Liquid Container Research
At the Liquid Container Laboratory, we collaborate with the Paper-Pak Sales Division to enhance the performance of our paper carton products (including NP-PAK, NS-FUJI, NSATOM, SPOPS), filling machines, and closures. Our work involves introducing new functionalities and developing, designing, and evaluating new shapes. Driven by market demands and environmental considerations, we are committed to developing high-value-added products, aspiring for them to become the preferred container choice for both customers and society.
-
Paper Packaging Filling Systems (NP-PAK, NS-FUJI, NSATOM)

Our paper cartons and aseptic filling systems are infused with innovative ideas and technologies. They are designed to prioritize not only environmental considerations but also the overall ease of use and drinkability throughout the entire process, from beverage filling and distribution to the consumer.
-
Non-Food Package products(SPOPS)

We are conducting research and development on packaging products that maximize the potential of wood—a renewable resource—and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
