Barrier Paper

Barrier Paper

We have developed “SHIELDPLUS™”, a paper packaging material that offers high barrier properties against oxygen, flavor, and water vapor. This environmentally friendly material is expected to be a new alternative to plastic films, with a wide range of applications.

Paper packaging material “SHIELDPLUS™”

Environmentally friendly by switching from plastic films to paper

Paper is widely used as a packaging material (sheet) due to its environmental friendliness and ease of processing. However, its inherent pores made it unsuitable for applications requiring high barrier properties. We have developed "SHIELDPLUS™", a new paper packaging material that utilizes environmentally friendly paper while offering excellent barrier properties.

Giving barrier properties to paper / Keeping contents safe by blocking oxygen and water vapor

It is well known that one method for giving barrier properties to paper involves applying a water-based coating composed primarily of pigments and binders.
Compared to plastic films, paper is a substrate with many surface irregularities, so coating techniques that form a uniform barrier layer are important. By applying our cultivated manufacturing technology for coated paper used in printing, we carefully selected materials suitable for preventing the permeation of oxygen and water vapor which have different molecular sizes and properties. This approach enabled us to successfully develop a paper packaging material with unprecedented barrier properties.

Aiming for high barrier properties comparable to film

"SHIELDPLUS™" offers oxygen barrier and flavor barrier properties comparable to those of barrier films used in food and other packaging. Therefore, it is utilized for applications that conventional paper materials cannot achieve. In addition, it is expected to be developed into new applications by taking advantage of the characteristics not found in film, such as environmental friendliness and soft texture.

From "sheet" to "package" with excellent processing suitability

Processing suitability is also important for use as a package. SHIELDPLUS™ has compatibility with various lamination processes (extrusion lamination, sandwich lamination, dry lamination, etc.). Furthermore, by only laminating a sealant layer, SHIELDPLUS™ can be processed using general-purpose bag making and molding machines. This confirms its potential for a wide range of applications, including flexible packaging, paper cups, and paper containers. This allows for various applications, such as flexible packaging, paper cups, and containers.
