Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo,President and Representative Director: Toru Nozawa, hereinafter referred to as"Nippon Paper Industries”), DOWA Ecosystem Co., Ltd. (head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo,President and Representative Director: Yasuharu Yasuharu Yanai, hereinafter referred to as"DOWA" ”Japan Freight Railway Co., Ltd. (head office : Shibuya-ku, Tokyo,President and Representative Director: Arata Inukai, hereinafter referred to as"JR Freight”) agreed today to start round transportation between Akita Prefecture and the Tokyo metropolitan area. Nippon Paper Industries, which hasmillin Akita Prefecture, and DOWA, with the cooperation of JR Freight, have been conducting demonstration experiments since November 2021 under a scheme that uses four 20-foot containers owned by DOWA to carry out round transportation.

In order to efficiently transport recycled raw materials from the Tokyo metropolitan area to groupmillin Akita Prefecture, DOWA has been actively producing private containers tailored to the items to be transported, and has been promoting the use of rail transportation. In this round of transportation, by matching the empty cargo section of the largest container owned by DOWA, it is possible to realize the double-track transportation method by modal shift ofcontainerboards, and comprehensively improve the efficiency of long-distance transportation between Akita Prefecture and the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Nippon Paper Industries produces container boards at its Akita mill, but due to product height constraints, it has been difficult to use containers in the past, and shipments to the Tokyo metropolitan area have been mostly trucked. DOWA's 20-foot container can be loaded with products up to 220 cm tall by opening the upper wing of the side, so part of the product transportation can be switched to freight rail transportation, and the transportation method is double-tracked and efficient.

JR Freight will be responsible for trunk transportation in round transportation between Akita Prefecture and the Tokyo metropolitan area of both companies. Taking advantage of the excellent characteristics of railways, such as the lowestCO2 emissions and high labor productivity, we aim to achieve"Improving Logistics Productivity and Realizing a Green Society" as listed in"JR Cargo Group Long-Term Vision 2030”.

The three companies will continue to work together to accelerate the modal shift on this route. By utilizing railways in long-distance transportation sections, we will contribute to the construction of a sustainable society by reducing the burden of truck logistics, diversifying risks and improving stability and reducing GHG emissions by double-track transportation modes.
