Started full-scale efforts to register and obtain certification for international standards for raw materials for pure domestic SAF

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as"GEI”), Sumitomo Corporation (hereinafter referred to as"" Sumitomo Corporation”SAF Distribution Working Group of the Public-Private Council for Promoting the Introduction of SAF will aim”to register and certify wood raw materials (main logging, residues, and waste) as CORSIA Qualified Fuels (CEF)*2 in the SAF Certification Task Group*1 of the"Distribution Working Group for Promoting the Introduction of SAF "Pilot Operators”.
The Company with GEI and Sumitomo Corporation, we are considering starting production of bioethanol derived fromdomestic timberwith an annual output of tens of thousands of kiloliters of Bioethanol at the Company mill in FY2027. TheBioethanolproduced is intended to be used as a raw material for domestic SAF and other materials, taking into account the utilization ofdomestic timberand its contribution to acarbon neutral society. In order to use new raw materials as SAF, it is necessary to obtain registration and certification as CEF stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
This time, SAF made from Bioethano lderived from woody biomass, which is under consideration by the three companies, was selected by the SAF certification task group"Public-Private Council to Promote the Adoption of SAF”which is the secretariat of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. We will proceed with the registration of wood raw materials (main logging, residues, and waste) as SAF raw materials"Pilot Operators”with the support of the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
The Company with GEI and Sumitomo Corporation, we are working on the registration and certification ofBioethanolderived from woody biomass as a CEF as a pilot operator, and we are working on the first pure domesticcellulosebioethanol in Japan usingdomestic timber.Bioethanol We aim to useBioethanolproduced in commercial plants as a raw material for SAF.
*1 The Public-Private Council for Promoting the Introduction of sustainable aviation fuel(SAF) was established in April 2022 as a forum for the public and private sectors to discuss technical and economic issues and solutions and promote joint efforts to accelerate the introduction of SAF. Under the public-private council, there is a SAF Manufacturing and Supply Working Group and a SAF Distribution Working Group, and a SAF Certification Task Group has been established under the SAF Distribution Working Group to promote initiatives related to CORSIA qualified fuel registration and certification of domestic SAF.
*2 In order to be recognized as a SAF with GHG reduction effects by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), it is necessary to obtain registration and certification as"CORSIA Qualified Fuel (CEF)". CORSIA is" Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Civil Aviation”as defined by ICAO.
