As a co-creation project between companies and research institutions, we will take action such as (1) continuous dissemination of information through various media, (2) promotion of cooperative communities with local governments and companies, (3) development and certification of products and services, and (4) research and development related to resilient life.

On the occasion of the launch of "Resilient Life Project", I-Resilience Advisor Haruo Hayashi (Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University), President andPresident and Representative DirectorMakoto Kobayashi, and representatives of participating corporations took the stage"Bosai Kokutai 2023 (The 8th National Conference for the Promotion of Disaster Risk Reduction)”to be held on Sunday, September 17."A lifestyle called resilient life that coexists with risks and aims for a prosperous 100 years”will be a talk session.

1. Project Background: The Need to Increase Resilience

On September 1, 2023, 100 years have passed since the Great Kanto Earthquake, which caused enormous damage, with approximately 105,000 people dead and missing. In the future, with the Nankai Trough earthquake and the Tokyo metropolitan earthquake expected to occur, wind and flood damage, snow and ice disasters, and landslide disasters have tended to become more frequent, severe, and widespread in recent years against the backdrop of climate change, and the difficulties faced by consumers, such as disaster damage and evacuation, areForecastto increase further. In fact, despite having 0.25% of the world's land area, Japan is a major natural disaster country*Note1 that accounts for 16% of the world's total natural disaster damage. Nevertheless, for example, 40.8% of people work on"Food and water stockpiles”as a preparedness, and 35.9% of"Fixing furniture, etc.”. *Note2

On the other hand, due to changes in the world situation and the rapid advancement of technology, society and living environments are undergoing major changes. In the midst of rapid change, there are many difficulties created by risks caused by society, such as network disasters and environmental pollution, as well as risks caused by individuals related to physical and mental health and career development. In addition, in Japan, where society and living environments are undergoing major changes due to population decline, aging, and declining food self-sufficiency rates, it is urgent to enhance resilience to overcome the difficulties created by all risks in order to achieve a prosperous life.

2. What is resilient life?

It is a new lifestyle that aims to realize a richer life by increasing"Resilience”to overcome the difficulties created by all risks, including the risk of natural disasters, the risks caused by society, and the risks caused by individuals.

Although the risks caused by each are different, we believe that increasing resilience in daily life to overcome all difficulties starting from the individual will increase the power of self-help through raising individual awareness and mutual assistance through cooperation between local governments and companies, and as a result, it will also lead to a higher level of response to natural disasters.

3. Project Statement

4. Comments from representatives of participating companies and organizations

Advisor of I-Resilience Co., Ltd. / Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University Haruo Hayashi

In the first half of the 21st century, disasters of catastrophic scale, such as the Nankai Trough earthquake and the Tokyo metropolitan earthquake, are predicted. On the other hand, in Japan, where the population continues to decline, the ability to help oneself and mutual assistance decreases due to the aging of the population, and public assistance becomes more severe due to a decrease in tax revenue due to a decrease in the working-age population. Under such circumstances, mutual assistance, which is mutual assistance based on the system, and self-help by expanding the quality of market services are promising as measures to enhance resilience. Both require the power of the private sector and the power of each of us. Your need for "Resilient Life Project”is here.
