Toyota United Shizuoka sells J-credits for Fuji and KitayamaCompany-owned Foreststo Smart Energy for carbon offset applications of commercial vehicles

~to connect the multifaceted value generated by appropriate forest management to carbon offsets~

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo,President and Representative Director: Toru Nozawa, hereinafter referred to as"the Company”) is a part of the J-Credits (Note 1) created for the purpose of carbon offset in the KitayamaCompany-owned Forests(Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture) owned at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Sold to Smart Energy Co., Ltd. (Representative Director: Takuya Ogushi: Minato-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as"Smart Energy”). The credit sold will be used to offset the carbon of certain models of commercial vehicles sold by Toyota United Shizuoka Corporation.

The Company own a total of approximately 90,000 hectares of forests throughout Japan, and over the years, we have been promoting the use of these resources and implementing appropriate forest management, and all forests have been certified by the Japanese forest certification"SGEC Certification System”(Note 2). KitayamaCompany-owned Forestsis the first forest to receive SGEC forest certification, and since 2012, it has been implementing a thinning promotion project under the Ministry of the Environment's Offset Credit Certification System (J-VER) to generate credits for forest absorption.

In particular, as aGreen Strategy, it claims tomaximize forest valueand building a carbon-neutral society, and this project is part of that initiative.

The amount of greenhouse gas emission reduction and absorption through the introduction of energy-savingequipment and forest management is guaranteed by the government as"Credits”, and is a system that integrates the domestic credit system and the offset credit system (J-VER).

In 2003, it was established as a unique forest certification system in Japan to promote the domestic forestry industry and timber industries and realize sustainable forest management. In 2016, it was mutually approved with the PEFC Forest Certification System, an international forest certification system.
