Iguchi Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shimosuwa-cho, Suwa-gun, Nagano Prefecture, President & CEO: Masanori Iguchi) and Santia Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, President & CEO: Kazumi Shiratori) and Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.(Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Toru Nozawa) have started recycling used paper cups in January 2025.
In the future, we will also consider upcycling products from collected paper cups into paper yarn products such as eco-bags, as well as toilet paper used in hotels and inns, with the aim of promoting resource recycling and reducing CO2 emissions.
◆Introduction background
Iguchi Co., Ltd. and Santia Co., Ltd. have been actively promoting initiatives related to the SDGs for a long time. On the other hand, at the three hotels and inns operated by Iguchi Co., Ltd. and Santia Co., Ltd. in Nagano Prefecture, 100% pulp paper cups are used for the cold water service provided in the dressing room, but the problem was that the used paper cups were disposable. Specifically, the amount of paper cups used in the three facilities is approximately 60,000 to 70,000 per year, and most of them are designated as contraindicated items in the waste paper classification and are disposable*.
In order to solve this problem,Nippon Paper Industries has used the recycling technology it has cultivated over many years to separate the plastic and paper that are glued to the surface of the paper cup into their respective materials, and refined the technology to extract recycled paper fibers to achieve recycling.
In order to promote environmentally friendly initiatives at two facilities operated by Iguchi Co., Ltd. (facility name: Kamisuwa Onsen Hamenoyu and Seisenkaku Kameya) and one facility operated by Santia Co., Ltd. (facility name: RAKO Hanoi Hotel), which are located in Nagano Prefecture, we have properly sorted and collected paper cups and collected them at Nippon Paper Industries and Nippon Paper Industries In cooperation with the Group's NP Trading Co., Ltd., we will promote recycling initiatives.
*Used food paper containers are designated as contraindicated items in the classification of waste paper set by the Waste Paper Recycling Promotion Center from technical perspectives such as the method of extracting paper fibers from materials that have been compounded and waterproofed by gluing plastic to paper, the treatment of plastic remaining after removing the paper fibers, and from the perspective of hygiene such as stains and odors of food residues adhering to the containers. It is currently incinerated as general garbage.
