Participated in the Natural Capital Accounting Project led by the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition (ISFC)
Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd.
We are pleased to announce that we will participate in the Natural Capital Accounting Project led by the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition (ISFC).
The project is a collaboration between 18 leading forestry companies that own and manage more than 24 million hectares of forests in 21 countries, in collaboration with the Capitals Coalition and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). By applying the principles and reporting methods of natural capital accounting in the demonstration stage as a consistent standard system, we will conduct pilot tests for the establishment of a broad consensus-based system and valuation of the system.
The vast forests owned and managed by the Company in Japan and overseas not only supply timber, but also have various public welfare functions such as disaster prevention, water recharge, biodiversity protection, and carbon storage. Forests are positioned as"Natural capital”to provide these ecosystem services, providing irreplaceable value to the global society.
By participating in this project, we will be involved in the establishment of a system of"Natural Capital Accounting”to evaluate the value of natural capital economically, and will use this system to evaluate the value of company-owned forests. We hope that this will attract legitimate investment and lead to the maintenance and restoration of forests.
For more information about the project, as well as comments from participating companies and organizations, as well as from stakeholders, please see the ISFC's news release.
