Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd.
DOWA Holdings Co., Ltd. (4-14-1 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Capital: 36.4 billion yen, President: Akira Sekiguchi) and Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd.(4-6 Kanda-Surugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Capital: 104.8 billion yen, President: Akira Sebe, hereinafter referred to as NIPPON PAPER INDUSTRIES) In order to build a sustainable logistics system, the company has been operating round transportation*3 through the collaboration of arterial logistics*1 and intravenous logistics*2 that transcend industry boundaries. With the aim of further strengthening this round of transportation, we have jointly produced a new dedicated container, which will be put into full-scale use in June 2025 after trial operation.
This time, the DOWA ecosystem and NIPPON PAPER INDUSTRIES have jointly produced seven new 20-foot containers, increasing the transportation capacity by about three times the previous one. The new container is a container exclusively for this round of transportation, and it is the first in Japan to adopt a design with the company logo of the shippers*4 and the cargo transportation section is also displayed.
In August 2024, this round of transportation was certified by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as a comprehensive logistics efficiency law*5, and is evaluated as an advanced modal shift*6 as a groundbreaking round-trip railway transportation that combines arterial and intravenous logistics. In addition, the joint production of this dedicated container is also an advanced modal shift initiative, utilizing the ministry's modal shift acceleration emergency countermeasure subsidy system.
The DOWA ecosystem will continue to strengthen cooperation within and outside the group to promote the modal shift of long-distance transportation. We will work to solve the issues faced by the Japan logistics industry, such as the shortage of drivers and the reduction of environmental impact, and pursue the quality of circulation by building a sustainable logistics system that supports society.
NIPPON PAPER GROUP will make the most of its wide-area network and work to solve the problems faced by the Japan logistics industry. We will continue to actively collaborate with partner companies outside the Group to build a sustainable logistics system and contribute to society by expanding medium- and long-distance joint transportation and modal shift promotion.
The two companies will continue to work together to further expand logistics cooperation and build a sustainable logistics system.
*1 Arterial logistics: Logistics involved in production, packaging, shipping, delivery, etc., from procuring raw materials, manufacturing products, and providing them to consumers
*2 Intravenous logistics: Logistics associated with the collection, recycling, and disposal of used and returned products after consumer use
*3 rounds of transportation: After unloading the cargo loaded on the outbound route at the destination, the return trip loads another cargo and returns to the departure point, thereby increasing the loading rate of the round-trip vehicle.

*4 According to our research (as of July 22, 2025)
*5 This is a system in which the government certifies and supports businesses that have achieved logistics efficiency in addition to reducing environmental impact. The content of support includes subsidies for planning and operation expenses for initiatives such as modal shifts
*6 Modal shift: Shifting freight transportation from trucks and other automobiles to railways and ships with low environmental impact. Rail transportCO2 emissions are very small at about 1/11 compared to trucking, and the adoption of modal shifts will lead to a reduction inCO2 emissions.
