Sumitomo forestry industry participates in“Morisora Project ^(R)”

Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd.(President: Toshiro Mitsuyoshi, head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and Morisora Biorefinery LLC (head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) signed a basic agreement on the 30th for a partnership in the production and sales of Bioethanol derived fromdomestic timber.

 

■Collaboration details

In order to produceBioethanolderived from domestic timber, it is essential to ensure stable procurement of woodWood chips, which are the raw materials. Sumitomo forestry industrywill be responsible for procuring somedomestic timberused in the Morisora Project^(R) and will contribute to stable raw material procurement. By using domestic timberas a raw material, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions during procurement and transportation and promote the use of wood in a cascade.

The Morisora Project^(R) utilizes the advanced technology of Green Earth Institute Co., Ltd. to promote the production of low-carbonBioethanolderived fromdomestic timber. As we aim to obtain CORSIA certification^*1 fordomestic timber, Sumitomo forestry industry will provide support from the perspective of raw material supply.

 

■What is the Morisora Project ^(R)?

In February 2023, Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd., Sumitomo Corporation, and Green Earth Institute Co., Ltd. launched“Morisora Project^(R)” under the Slogan “Turning the Power of Forests into the Power of Flight”. We launched it. In March 2025, Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. and Airbus SE participated in the Morsora Project to streng then the production and disseminationpromotion structureBioethanol, which is a raw material for SAF. In July 2025, three companies,Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd., Sumitomo Corporation, and GEI, invested in the establishment of Morisora biorefinery LLC, which manufactures Bioethanol.

Sumitomo forestry industry will participate in the Morisora Project ^(R) and aim for a stable supply ofdomestic timber, which will be the raw material for purely domesticBioethanol. In addition to contributing to the creation of new wood uses through the spread ofBioethanolderived fromdomestic timber, which is a raw material for SAF and other materials, we will work to build acarbon neutral societythrough resource recycling, revitalize local communities, and realize a sustainable future.

 

■History

Sumitomo forestry industryis developing its business globally from forest management to the manufacture and distribution of woodBuildimg Material, contracting of detached houses and medium-sized wooden buildings, real estate development, and woodbiomasspower generation“Wood”andbiorefinery. ^*2 We are also promoting the business. In November 2023, we signed an operating capital alliance agreement with GEI to research and develop biochemical products using woodybiomassas raw materials. In January 2024, we established thebiorefineryPromotion Office of the New Business Development Department to developbiorefinerytechnology and verify business models.
