Environmentally Friendly Paper Barrier Material "SHIELDPLUS^®" is Adopted in the Packaging of Zenno Pearl Rice Uonuma Koshihikari

Nippon Paper Industries Co.,Ltd.(head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President &President and Representative Director: Akira Sebe, hereinafter referred to as “the Company”) paper barrier material "SHIELDPLUS^®" has been announced by Zenno Pearl Rice Co., Ltd. (head office : Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Sadao Yamamoto, hereinafter referred to as “Zennoh Pearl Rice”) was adopted in the packaging of Koshihikari from Uonuma. It was developed with the cooperation of Zennoh Pearl Rice and Ishikawa Co., Ltd. (head office : Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, President &President and Representative Director: Katsunori Ebisawa, hereinafter referred to as “Ishikawa”). As a new rice paper packaging that contributes to reducing environmental burden, Koshihikari from Uonuma sold by Zennoh Pearl Rice will be sequentially adopted  from May and will be displayed on the shelves of mass retailers nationwide. Through this initiative, we will contribute to reducing the amount of plastic used in rice distribution and realizing a sustainable society.

 

1. Development Background and Purpose

In recent years, with the increasing global environmental awareness, the reduction of plastic waste has become an issue, and the food industry is also required to switch to environmentally friendly packaging.

The Company enlisted the cooperation of Zennoh Pearl Rice, which supports the Japanese dining table, and Ishikawa, a packaging manufacturer, to develop packaging with low environmental burden. This development aims to reduce the amount of plastic used while ensuring the quality of rice.

 

2. Features of Paper Packaging

The newly developed rice paper packaging has the following features:

(1) Reduction of environmental burden

We used paper barrier material "SHIELDPLUS^®" to reduce the amount of plastic used.

Compared to conventional packaging, we have reduced approximately 38% for 2kg products and approximately 15% for 5kg products (weight ratio per 1m2).

(2) Quality preservation and functionality of rice

The effect of "SHIELDPLUS^®" does not damage the original flavor of the rice and retains the function suitable for storage, improving oxygen barrier and aroma retention compared to conventional packaging. (About 2kg products)

(3) Design and ease of use

It is easy to open, has a shape with increased independence, and is easy to weigh, and convenience has been taken into consideration. When you actually pick it up, you can feel the paper.

“Environmentally Friendly Barrier Material”was born by applying a barrier coating layer using water-based coating technology to paper substrate. Excellent barrier properties protect the contents and maintain quality.

3. Future Outlook

This package can also be deployed to various food and non-food packages that require oxygen barrier and fragrance retention. In order to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, we will promote product development while strengthening cooperation with partner companies with the aim of reducing environmental burden of the entire supply chain.
