InformationNippon Paper Industries Uses Its Own Technologies to Improve Plantation Productivity— To Be Presented at the Global “Biomass in the Net-Zero Economy Virtual Conference” —

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.

On April 21, Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Toru Nozawa; headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) will take part in the global "Biomass in the Net-Zero Economy Virtual Conference" being organized online by the Centre for Management Technology Pte. Ltd. (CMT). The company will deliver a presentation about its initiatives to improve plantation productivity in Northern Brazil through its proprietary tree breeding technology1.

Nippon Paper Industries has been conducting overseas afforestation projects as a part of its promotion of sustainable wood resource procurement for around 30 years. Recently, the company has been developing plantation technologies. It conducted research at its largest plantation in the state of Amapa in Northern Brazil, at Amapa Florestal e Celulose S.A. (AMCEL)2.

Since Nippon Paper Industries began operating AMCEL's plantations in 2006, productivity has significantly improved through selective breeding using genetic information and through the introduction of its cutting technology for seedling production. These achievements will be presented at the global conference.

With action on climate change being an urgent global issue, forests, with their CO2 absorption and fixation capacity, are pointing the way to the goal of decarbonization. Against this backdrop, Nippon Paper Industries seeks to widely expand the technologies, which have been proved to be effective at AMCEL. These, together with the company's sustainable forest resource cycle, should enable significant improvements in forest productivity per unit area.

The company will continue to produce products beneficial to society from forest resources. The Group sees this as its key business platform in working toward helping to realize a carbon-neutral society.
