Press ReleasesRegarding Discontinuation of Considerations on Nippon Paper Industries Akita Mill Power Business Plan

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Fumio Manoshiro, hereinafter "the Company") developed a thermal power business plan at Akita Mill (Akita-shi, Akita) and submitted the "Environmental Impact Statement Regarding Nippon Paper Industries Akita Mill Thermal Business Plan," which was based on the ordinance concerning the Akita prefecture environmental impact assessment, in January 2016.
Since then, it has proceeded with considerations on biomass mixed combustion with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions, and it obtained equipment accreditation from FIT (feed-in tariff) in February 2017.
Although the Company has made considerations to achieve a power business using biomass mono-fuel combustion at a power generation output of 112 MW since last year, it has decided to discontinue the considerations because it has determined that sufficient business feasibility cannot be expected with this plan.

With the slogan "shaping the future with trees," the Company is promoting the expansion of a wide range of businesses that contribute to better living and cultural progress. Going forward, it will consider new expansions of the energy business that will contribute to a stable power supply by concentrating the strengths of our group, including our wood biomass resource procurement, our accumulated know-how of power generation, and the geographical advantages of the mills located nationwide.
