Press ReleasesNippon Paper Industries to Launch "Non-Aluminum FUJIPAK" System Environmentally Friendly Paper Cartons for Liquids, Allowing Long-term Storage at Room Temperature without Using Aluminum Foil

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Yoshio Haga) is commencing sales of the "Non-Aluminum FUJIPAK" system, a sterile filling and packaging system that allows drinks to be stored for long periods at room temperature without using aluminum foil. The Non-Aluminum FUJIPAK cartons can be collected in the same manner as the gable-top paper cartons for milk and other drinks (our product name: NP-PAK), and they also take advantage of paper's characteristics as a recyclable biomass material, so they are environmentally friendly paper cartons for liquids. With this, ITO EN, LTD. (President: Daisuke Honjo, Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) will introduce them as eco-friendly cartons for four products in the Jujitsu Yasai series, as they are scheduled to be relaunched sequentially on March 3.

We provide the FUJIPAK system, a brick-type paper carton for liquids that allows long-term storage at room temperature. It is a sterile filling and packaging system developed jointly by Nippon Paper Industries, which has experience packing drinks directly in paper cartons, and Shikoku Kakoki Co., Ltd. (President: Shigeru Ueda, Head Office: Itano-gun, Tokushima), which boasts advanced liquid filling technology. As aluminum foil is characterized by its excellent barrier performance, the system previously used aluminum foil stacked paper as the packaging material from the long-term storage aspect (Attached Sheet/Figure 1). However, taking recycling into account, we had to find a way of collecting the cartons in the same manner as the gable-top paper cartons in order to improve the recycling rate.

Responding to customer requests for environmentally friendly paper cartons, we looked for alternative materials to replace the aluminum foil. We successfully introduced the GL film from Toppan Printing Co. Ltd. (President: Shingo Kaneko, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.) This transparent high-barrier film features the same degree of barrier performance as that of aluminum foil, as well as recyclability, and it can be used for the new Non-Aluminum FUJIPAK system to store drinks for long periods of time at room temperature. The new system enables the paper cartons to be collected in the same manner as the gable-top paper cartons, and to be marked with the paper carton symbol (Attached Sheet/Figure 2). As it promotes recycling, it will contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions.
We will focus on sales of the environmentally friendly paper carton system for liquids to respond to customer requests.

With its expanded lineup, the "Opera" series will meet a wide range of customer needs as high-bulk woodfree book paper that has achieved the lowest density in the industry.
