School of Friendship for Forests and Paper
“School of Friendship for Forests and Paper” is a natural environment class for the next generation of leaders, taught by NIPPON PAPER GROUP employees as instructors and staff.
By experientially learning about the connection between paper, which is a familiar part of our daily lives, and nature, set in Nippon Paper's company-owned forests and mills, we aim to deepen people's understanding of the importance of environmental conservation and the fact that paper is a material that contributes to the construction of a circulation-oriented society.
This program started in 2006 in Marunuma Kogen (Gunma Prefecture) and is currently held regularly at two locations: Toyono company-owned forest (Kumamoto Prefecture) and Shiraoi Mill (Hokkaido). We will continue to contribute to the sustainable development of local communities while utilizing the Group's resources.
Toyono School of Friendship for Forests and Paper
Since 2007, this program has been held annually for elementary school students and their parents in the vicinity of Yatsushiro Mill. It was temporarily suspended due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection but resumed its activities in 2023.
Through tree planting at the Toyono company-owned forest, a hand-papermaking experience at the Yatsushiro Mill, and equipment tours, we provide an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of the importance of sustainable forest management and the fact that paper production is based on resource circulation. It has been well received as a community program that parents and children can experience together.
Shiraoi School of Friendship for Forests and Paper
In 2023, with the cooperation of the non-profit organization Tarumae arty+ and the Tomakomai City Museum of Art, both active in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, we started holding the event at the Shiraoi Mill. It is held annually, primarily for elementary and junior high school students residing in Tomakomai and their parents. In addition to tree planting in the Kitayoshihara company-owned forest, a hand-papermaking experience at the Shiraoi Mill, and equipment tours, the program is characterized by its flexible content, which changes each time, such as visits to a business partner's wood chip processing company. This flexibility has been well received by repeat participants.
