Analysis and Testing

Detailed analysis and evaluation are essential for maintaining and improving product quality, as well as for developing new products. At the Research Laboratory, we use state-of-the-art analytical equipment and expertise to support the development of new products, create new analytical methods and help improve the quality of existing products. Furthermore, we support the maintenance and improvement of product quality, as well as the development of new products across NIPPON PAPER GROUP by applying the analytical technologies we have cultivated in the paper industry.

Surface and Cross-section Observation

The performance of paper products is greatly influenced by their surface and cross-sectional structures. Using microscopes and scanning electron microscopes, we observe the structure of paper and coating layers at the micron- to nanoscale. We then apply this information to improve product quality.

Composition Analysis

Various papermaking chemicals, fillers, and pigments are used to impart new functionalities to paper products. We analyze the structure and composition of these materials using mass spectrometry, chromatography, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. In environmental analysis, ion chromatography enables highly accurate and sensitive composition analysis.

Structural Analysis

Products made from organic compounds with complex structures are highly sensitive to minor structural changes, which can significantly impact product quality. We incorporate precise molecular information, obtained through structural analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy, into our product design.

Support for Group Companies and Mills

NIPPON PAPER GROUP includes companies that handle a wide range of products, such as films, chemical products, and building materials, in addition to wood pulp products. We conduct rapid troubleshooting to address foreign matter that can significantly deteriorate product quality. We use equipment such as scanning electron microscopes with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometers (SEM-EDS), micro-infrared spectrometers, pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometers, and micro-X-ray diffractometers for this purpose.

Paper Physical Properties Testing

Paper physical property testing equipment is essential for quality control and evaluating new paper prototypes. We offer a variety of equipment that complies with the latest JIS and ISO standards for evaluating paper's fundamental properties.
