Press ReleasesNippon Paper Industries to Launch Verification Project for High-Quality Fly Ash as Admixture for Concrete, Contributing to Revitalizing Tohoku Through Effective Use of Combustion Ash from Ishinomaki Mill Coal Boiler Establishing Nippon Paper-ZEROTECHNO Tohoku Limited Liability Partnership in July

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Yoshio Haga) will establish the Nippon Paper-ZEROTECHNO Tohoku Limited Liability Partnership (Nippon Paper-ZEROTECHNO Tohoku) on July 1 with ZEROTECHNO Co., Ltd. (President: Hidetoshi Okada, Head Office: Oita-shi, Oita-ken, hereinafter referred to as "ZEROTECHNO") and within the premises of the Ishinomaki Mill of Nippon Paper Industries to launch a verification project for producing and selling CfFA®*1 (Carbon-free-Fly Ash) high-quality fly ash as an admixture for concrete. Through this project, Nippon Paper Industries will aim to popularize CfFA® as a construction material that contributes to revitalization of Tohoku areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Nippon Paper Industries has been striving to effectively use coal ash generated in coal boilers. This January it applied for the Revitalization Promotion Program (Matching Promotion) (official name: Adaptable & Seamless Technology Transfer Program through Target-driven R&D, High-risk Challenge type [Revitalization Promotion type]) implemented by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) (hereinafter referred to as the "JST Program") with technology development for modified fly ash*2 that enables long-term durability of concrete to be used as a core construction material for reconstructing disaster-affected areas. The fly ash is made from coal ash generated at the Ishinomaki Mill. The company filed the application jointly with ZEROTECHNO, Tohoku University and Oita University, and the application was accepted.

Along with the technology development under the JST Program, the establishment of Nippon Paper-ZEROTECHNO Tohoku will be the first step for early start of supply of CfFA® to the market as a construction material that contributes to revitalization of Tohoku areas affected by the earthquake. Specifically, Nippon Paper Industries will start pre-marketing activities for CfFA® prior to installing production equipment for the verification. At the same time, the company will develop the activities so they lead to wide contribution to social infrastructure improvement, with participation by Professor Makoto Hisada of Tohoku University and Professor Yoshiaki Sato of Oita University.
